Even though an outdoor adventure is an opportunity for relaxation, some elements of it can feel like a chore. One of those is tending to a fire that keeps everyone warm, provides light, or used to do some cooking. To make everything rum more smoothly, Japanese company UM created a stylish 8-Panel Fire Pit that is easy to use and portable too.

Drawing from their decades of work on metal processing, UM designed a fire pit that allows users to adjust the intensity of the fire effortlessly—something that is not so easy when dealing with firewood directly. Its adjustable combustion system with optimized airflow help translate to minimal smoke and easy cleanup, collecting any ashes and embers that fall. And while a traditional fire requires a bit of knowhow, UM swears their fire pit is easy for anyone to use.

The heart of this camping gadget is its removable eight-panel system, which boosts air circulation and helps the wood to burn more effectively. “With holes strategically placed at the bottom of each panel, fresh air is channeled directly to the base, serving as the primary combustion source,” writes the company. “As this air heats up, it ascends within the double-walled cavity of the panels and gets expelled from the top holes, resulting in secondary combustion.”

Rather than becoming a permanent fixture, the small size and portability of UM's design allows you to take this fire pit anywhere. Since saving space is also vital to camping, the UM fire pit disassembles into its different parts that can be stored in a special carrying case that is about the size of a laptop bag.

Given that fires have many uses, the UM fire pit is also versatile to suit the needs of each camper. Whether you want to illuminate a gathering, get ready for a grilled dinner, or simply gaze at the flames, the fire pit can be assembled in one of many ways. For example, you can choose between setting up all eight panels for cooking, or simply set up half of them to keep your party warm. The balance between heat and visibility is up to you.

The UM fire pit is available now through Kickstarter, and its clever design has caught enough attention that it has been successfully backed. You can order yours now at a special price, with the first fire pits shipping in January 2024.
